65-year-old Larry A. Dumse is the deceased.

Authorities responded to 1267 Day Street at approximately 8:05 a.m Sunday. Neighbors reported loud “popping sounds,” which Galesburg Police have confirmed as ammunition exploding inside of the home. Bullet holes could be seen throughout the exterior of the house.

Firefighters initially had a difficult time entering through the front of the building, in order to fight the interior fire.

In order to enter, side windows were then broken. In correlation with reports from police, Dumse is the owner of the home. He reportedly had various health concerns.

A dog was seen being taken from the smoke. Firefighters reportedly revived the animal at the scene, but according to reports from the Knox County Humane Society, the animal passed Monday.

GPD, GFD, EMT, Ameren, and the Humane Society were all on site. An investigation into the cause of the fire as well as Dumse’s death is still on-going at this time.
