Galesburg Sergeant Awarded Crime Stopper of the Year

Crime Stopper of the Year 2015At today’s Crime Stoppers meeting, a local officer was honored for his service in protecting the community.
Galesburg Police Sergeant Paul Vannaken was presented with a plaque for the Crime Stopper of the Year award.

Sergeant Vannaken tells WGIL that he had no idea he was being honored.

“Actually, I was totally surprised,” says Sergeant Vannaken. “I was told that I was coming here for another officer that works the day shift, that I supervise, and they absolutely blew my mind when I got the award,  I didn’t even know I was nominated, so it was an absolute surprise.”

Sergeant Vannaken says he didn’t do anything special, he just loves being a police officer and protecting the community.

The Crime Stopper of the Year is nominated by officers at the police station and approved by the crime stoppers board. Sergeant Vannaken says mostly he just tries to lead by example for his patrol officers.

This month the Crime Stoppers received 10 tips, which led to three arrests.

Discussions of elections were brought up at today’s meeting as well, with elections set for the next meeting in June.
