Team Of Volunteers To Help With Kankakee River Emergencies

KANKAKEE, Ill. (AP) — The police department in Kankakee has organized a 13-member volunteer Kankakee River emergency response team.

Kankakee Police Lt. Dave Skelly says the team will assist Kankakee fire and police department in case of problems on the river. Skelly tells The (Kankakee) Daily Journal that all of the volunteers live along the river. He says the team won’t actively patrol the river. Instead he says they’ll respond when needed.

The river previously had a patrol but it was disbanded a few years ago. Police Chief Larry Regnier says the volunteers will be asked to help until first responders can arrive. For example, they will be asked to help stranded boaters.
