Man Killed in Elevator accident At The McLean County Court

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) — A McLean County employee has been killed in an elevator accident at the county’s courthouse in Bloomington.

McLean County Coroner Kathleen Davis says 56-year-old John Hoeniges of Bloomington, a maintenance mechanic, was killed Tuesday at the Law and Justice Center.

The Pantagraph in Bloomington reports Hoeniges was last seen by witnesses heading toward the elevator shaft. The accident was later discovered by his co-workers.

Authorities say Hoeniges may have been struck by one or more elevator counterweights, which are used to stabilize the load of an elevator.

County Board Chairman Matt Sorensen says authorities don’t know why Hoeniges was in the shaft.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration and local agencies are investigating the incident.
