Vietnam Vet Approved For Illinois Veterans Post

CHICAGO (AP)–A U.S. Navy veteran who served during the Vietnam War has been confirmed as the new assistant director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

The Illinois Senate confirmed Harry F. Sawyer in a unanimous vote this week.

The 33-year state employee will manage special projects and oversee the state-wide field operations of the department.

The Lombard man served aboard the USS Agerholm. That included a tour of duty off the coast of Vietnam. Sawyer joined the Department of Veterans’ Affairs in 1982 as a veteran service officer.
