GCF Awards 20 Area Nonprofits in Match Grant Program

Galesburg Community FoundationThe Galesburg Community Foundation announced the recipients of its Nonprofit Endowment Match Grant this afternoon. 20 area nonprofit organizations were chosen–10 more then what was originally expected.

The foundation initially allocated $100,000 for the program, but decided to allocate more than double that figure in order to accommodate all 20 who applied.

GCF Executive Director Josh Gibb tells WGIL, that the reasoning behind increasing the number or organizations in the program was due to the large interest.

“When we saw the applications for the 20, they were all great applications,” says Gibb.  “If 20 organizations believe in themselves, why wouldn’t we believe in 20 organizations, so it was just ‘let’s just find the resources’. We just figured, we have to do it, they believe in themselves, we believe in them, we’re going to find the money, we’re going to make it work for everybody.”

Gibb says the foundation attempted this sort of grant in 2010, however, only four organizations applied for the funding.

Each of the 20 organizations will now enter into an agreement with the GCF in which they must raise $10,000 by June 30th of 2016. Once fundraising is complete, the foundation will match up to $10,000. Gibb says he expects many of the organizations involved to raise more than the requirement.

A few of today’s recipients included the Carl Sandburg Historic Site, Knox Prairie Community Kitchen, United Way of Knox County, and Choral Dynamics of Galesburg.
