ROWVA Superintendent Talks “Difficult Decisions” in First Year

Joe_SornbergerAs the school year wraps up for most schools in the area, an area Superintendent recently looked back on his year.

For ROWVA Superintendent Joe Sornberger, it was his first year–one plagued with what he says were “some difficult decisions.”‘

In February, District 208 reported a nearly $500,000 deficit to its education fund. Sornberger says an overall deficit combined with lower enrollment numbers has made it hard to plan for the future.

Sornberger tells the WGIL Morning News, that uncertainty at the state level has been an issue as well.

“One thing that I think everyone needs to realize, is that just because the state says they are going to give us a certain dollar amount, it doesn’t mean its going to come,” says Sornberger. “Once the money runs out–it runs out. You get an e-mail or a phone call that says the last $30,000 you were supposed to get–this isn’t coming. That’s one of the problems and issues we have from the state moving forward, is that, I don’t know what they are going to give us.”

Sornberger says the district has had to hold off on any new hiring decisions until state financial aid comes in. Currently, no plans are in place to make cuts to extra-curricular activities in order to balance the budget.
