Galesburg Civic Art Center Displays 15,000 Pieces of Art in Collaborative Display

Galesburg Civic Art CenterThe Galesburg Civic Art Center opened its newest exhibition today–the work of more than 70 contributors. The “Alternet” is now on display in the BLICK Gallery for visitors to see. The exhibit will remain in Galesburg through August 11th.

More than 15,000 works of art came together to make the piece. The work consists of an old wooden card-catalog filled with fifty drawers worth of individual cards submitted by individuals across the nation.

Although the piece is a collaboration between many artists, writers, and creative thinkers, the project was conceived and organized by artist/ sculptor Carla Rae Johnson. Johnson purchased the catalog back in 2010. About a year and a half later, she decided to honor the original function of the catalog.

The piece was completed in 2012. Since that time, it has traveled throughout the U.S., and has been featured in 12 venues.

An opening reception will be held Friday, June 26th at the center, beginning at 5 p.m. It is open to the public.
