Discovery Depot To Expand Space

discovery depotFollowing last nights TIF funding request approval from the Galesburg City Council, a local children’s museum will now begin what is being called “phase two” of renovations to their facility.

Discovery Depot will soon begin construction on its garage space, in order to build both a water-themed educational space and scientific learning lab.

Project Manager Steve Gerstenberger says following completion, the facility will have upgraded nearly 1,075 square feet of exhibit and learning space.

Gerstenberger tells the WGIL Evening News, that the project will bring other improvements as well.

“What this space will also do is create accessibility to the build room, which is currently non-accessible off the main exhibit space,” says Gerstenberger. “At that point also, we’ll be having to relocate an office which sits right in the midst of a corridor that will lead into that space, which will be put on the mezzanine floor, which is currently closed off.”

Gerstenberger says the depot plans to start “phase three,” following completion of the garage renovation. The third phase will expand upon the facilities second floor.

Galesburg City Council members essentially started the process last night. Through TIF funds, the depot received $500,000–money which will be paid back on an increment system over five years. Gerstenberger says that covers about 33 percent. Total project cost is estimated at around $1.5 Million dollars.
