United Way Debuts 2-1-1 Phone System in Knox County

United Way LogoResidents of Knox County will now have a new multi-purpose resource at their disposal.

The United Way of Knox County announced earlier this week, that the 2-1-1 phone system is now available for information and referrals to human services.

Callers can inquire about various types of assistance, including suicide prevention, employment supports, and basic human needs.

That’s according to United Way Executive Director Ann Tucker, who says the county has been working to install the system for about five years now.

Tucker tells WGIL, that the organization was able to install it this year, thanks to an endowment grant from the Galesburg Community Foundation.

“With the grant, we didn’t have to use any campaign dollars, so our agencies were still allocated funds,” says Tucker. ” At the same time, we’re able to bring this new program in because of the grant, so for that we are extremely grateful.”

Tucker says she expects volunteer opportunities to be available in the future for those who wish to serve. 2-1-1 will also reportedly provide an outlet for non-emergency calls, which can account for up to 45 percent of all 911 calls. The line is available to caller seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
