Naperville Wants To Honor Longtime Mayor With New Title

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (AP) — The city of Naperville wants to give former longtime Mayor George Pradel with the honorary title mayor emeritus.

The 77-year-old Pradel stepped down in January after 20 years leading the western Chicago suburb. Current Mayor Steve Chirico on Tuesday asked the City Council about his proposal to give Pradel the unpaid job. The (Naperville) Sun reports he received broad support.

Chirico says Pradel would epresent the mayor’s office at ceremonial events that the sitting mayor couldn’t attend.

The council will have to formally approve Chirico’s resolution creating the position. It would be filled by the immediate past mayor and terminate when the appointing mayor leaves office.

Pradel says he’s thrilled with the idea of representing the city on occasion.
