Belleville Sues To Overturn State Approval of New Hospital

O’FALLON, Ill. (AP) — The city of Belleville is challenging a state board’s approval of a new private hospital in nearby O’Fallon to replace an aging downtown location.

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board in April unanimously endorsed a plan by St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for a 144-bed facility along Interstate 64 in southwestern Illinois. It would replace a 303-bed downtown hospital built in 1953 that includes two buildings nearly 90 years old.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports that an appeal seeking to overturn the state’s decision was filed on May 21 at the request of the city’s elected leaders.

St. Elizabeth’s plans to break ground on the new hospital Friday. The hospital said in a statement that its leaders “are disappointed the city of Belleville is unwilling to accept the unanimous decision.”
