Health Professionals Meet To Address Human Trafficking

CHICAGO (AP) — Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez is enlisting Chicago-area hospitals in the fight against human trafficking.

More than 100 health care professionals met Thursday to talk about ways to identify and help victims who’ve been forced into prostitution or labor.

The meeting was organized as part of Alvarez’ initiative against human trafficking. It was held at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago in partnership with Swedish Covenant Hospital.

Alvarez says it’s important for medical professionals to get training so they can recognize indicators of human trafficking. She says that a victim seeking medical attention may be temporarily out from under the control of traffickers. That gives hospitals and doctors an opportunity to help.
