Illinois Legislators “Raise Their Glass” to Happy Hour Specials, Local Bar Owners Would Embrace

Galesburg-city-signEver since the late 1980s, happy hour drink specials have been banned in Illinois.

The Illinois House and Senate have approved a bill that would bring back these drink specials.

Currently, the bill is awaiting approval by Governor Bruce Rauner.

Cherry Street Restaurant and Bar Owner Stan Devlin says if the legislation passes, they would probably participate and implement a happy hour special.

Happy Hour was originally banned over concerns of excessive drinking and drunk driving.

Devlin tells WGIL that he thinks the concern still stands, but that his staff is trained to watch for signs of over-drinking.

“All of our people have been basset certified with the state, determining whether or not somebody is over the point of intoxication,”says Devlin. “They have been trained on checking ideas, determining the signs of intoxication. I think that would be a requirement also.”

The bill would specify that specials could only run for four hours a day and not after 10 p.m.

Other local bars and restaurants have expressed interest in adding happy hour specials as well if legislation is passed.
