Relatives Raise Questions in Wake of Nursing Home Deaths

CAHOKIA, Ill. (AP) — Family members are raising questions about care at a southwest Illinois nursing home after two residents died in April.

The (Belleville) News-Democrat reports relatives are questioning circumstances around the deaths of 76-year-old John Brown Jr. and 86-year-old Pauline Purifoy.

The newspaper reports Brown died after he choked on oatmeal. Family members say Purifoy was transported to the hospital after throwing up bile. She died in the next day.

The Illinois Department of Public Health is investigating two April deaths at the facility, but officials would not give details. Purifoy’s relatives say they’ve also been interviewed by Illinois State Police.

Robin Suydam is a facility director. Suydam says the nursing home recently received complaints alleging issues with care and treatment, but declined to discuss further citing privacy and confidentiality rights.
