900 Runners Estimated at “Soggy” Run Galesburg Run

Run Galesburg Run 1Around 7 a.m. yesterday, the corner of Simmons and Prairie streets in Galesburg were full with runners, volunteers, and food vendors.

Mayor John Pritchard fired the starting gun this year at the 4th annual Run Galesburg Run–or was it “Rain Galesburg Rain?”

Heavy downpour flooded the streets shortly after more than 900 runners left the starting line, however, it didn’t seem to stop too many.

That’s according to Marketing Coordinator Dave Dunn who tells WGIL, that he was surprised so many people still participated even with bad weather.

“We know we had like 100 people sign up in the last two days via paper, and we were like–didn’t you see the weather forecast,” says Dunn. “It’s kind of cool to see so many people committed to running, and I’ve seen a number of people have their personal best.”

Dunn says for the most part things went smoothly, but that weather did present a few issues.

“One of the things is the food service, because we offer food for the athletes. We had to move all of that food inside because it got wet but then we have to move it back outside. That becomes more and more important for the distance runners–the half-marathoners, but the 5K’ers want to eat something too. You just roll with it.” Run Galesburg Run 2

Runners had the opportunity to run a mile fun run, a 5K, or a half marathon yesterday. More than 200 volunteers helped with events throughout the morning and early afternoon as well.
