Congresswoman Cheri Bustos Visits Galva Ethanol Plant to Support Renewable Fuels

bustos at galvaBig River Resources had a special guest yesterday, who is in full support of renewable fuels.

Congresswoman Cheri Bustos toured the Galva Ethanol Plant and new Zein (ZANE) production plant during her visit.

Bustos says she thinks the EPA is way off in their announcement of long-delayed biofuel targets in the Renewal Fuel Standard program.

Bustos told a group of farmers, plant workers, bankers, and Big River Resources CEO Ray Defenbaugh that the EPA is not following the guidelines set by Congress with their recommendation of lowering biofuel blend levels.

Bustos said in the meeting that there is still time to fight against their announcement, as it is only a recommendation.

“Keep in mind that the EPA is a proposal and it’s not final,” says Bustos. “I think it’s important to note that there is a time for the public to weigh in, for members of Congress to way in, for us to still influence the final decision on this.”

Bustos says if the blend levels stay this way, the cost of gas could increase by six and a half cents per gallon for consumers.

Last year, Bustos led a group of 30 congress members in sending a letter to the EPA expressing concern.

According to Bustos, raising the blend levels will help both the rural economy and the nation’s energy security.
