Galesburg Honors Altrusa Club for 70 years of Service

AltrusabluelogoToday is Altrusa Day in Galesburg, in order to honor the clubs 70 years of service to the community. The official decree was made by Mayor John Pritchard last week, at the Galesburg City Council meeting.

The Altrusa Club has provided service since it was founded locally in 1945. The current 29 member club of business women operates as a non-profit through leadership development and community service, focusing on literacy as well as other local needs.

Altrusa has aided a number of groups in the area, such as, the Linwood Cemetery Scattering Garden, Safe Harbor, and the Salvation Army. Most recently, the group has focused on efforts at Galesburg High School North.

President Fran Moore says for the past three years, group members have taught students cooking, craft making, and jewelry making.

In 2013, the organization awarded a $1,500 scholarship to a local resident who returned to school to work toward a degree.

Pritchard added in the proclamation last week, that the club prides itself on providing community women with financial and personal resources in order for them to improve their career status.

Moore says local Altrusa members will celebrate the day on Thursday at their monthly meeting.
