Man Rescued After Pickup Swept Into Central Illinois River

ST. JOSEPH, Ill. (AP) — Authorities say they’ve rescued a man from a pickup that was in water several feet deep in central Illinois.

Champaign County sheriff’s Sgt. Jeff Vercler tells The News-Gazette  that 89-year-old Robert Schiff tried to drive through water on a roadway near St. Joseph Monday afternoon. Vercler says the pickup was carried about 100 feet into the Salt Fork River.

According to Vercler, Schiff waited about 45 minutes before he was rescued by a dive team. The top of the pickup was barely above water, and Schiff was half out of the window and hanging onto the truck.

Vercler said Schiff was OK, just “really, really cold.”
