Abingdon Police Department Raises Funds For Injured Officer

Officer Jon RekashThe Abingdon Police Department is raising funds to help an officer who was injured over the weekend.
Officer Jon Rekash was injured in a motorcycle accident this past Saturday. He is currently being treated for injuries.

The most severe injury is a fractured spine, which has left him paralyzed from the chest down.

Abingdon Police Officer Matt Wood tells WGIL that Rekash is an outgoing person who is easy to get along with.

“He’s pretty outgoing and easy to get along with,” says Wood. “Jon is very community oriented and as a police officer he was always looking to help people out instead of making their situations worse.”

Wood says Rekash is currently underwent surgery yesterday to fix a fracture in his nose.

The Abingdon Police Department has currently raised over $1,300 for Rekash — all in  one night.

Wood says the funds will go towards supporting the family, and to pay for travel to the hospital.

“He was the sole breadwinner for his family, so, those funds are going to go to help support them until she can find something to do, or until they can find another source of income.”

A fundraising event is being planned for later this month, but no specific details have been determined at this time.
