Alderman Protesting “Chiraq” Refuses Permit For Block Party

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago alderman who wants director Spike Lee to change the title of his upcoming movie about black-on-black violence says he will not approve the closing of a street for an annual block party.

Alderman David Moore says the party planned by St. Sabina’s Catholic Church and the Rev. Michael Pfleger is co-sponsored by Lee and the cast of “Chiraq.” A casting call last month for the movie was held at St. Sabina.

Moore says he denied the permit because of the “economic impact” the title “Chiraq” would have on his ward. He said mothers who’ve lost their children to violence have reservations about the movie’s title.

Pfleger says he is not about to let a rookie alderman he claims is overstepping his bounds spoil the party. He says it will go on Saturday with or without a permit.
