5 Madison County Associate Judges Voted Out of Office

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Five southwestern Illinois judges will soon step down from the bench after failing to win adequate support from the circuit’s senior jurists.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports that five of Madison County’s 13 associate judges fell short of the required 60 percent vote of approval among the 3rd Judicial Circuit’s nine senior judges. The judicial circuit also includes neighboring Bond County.

Associate judges Duane Bailey, Ben Beyers, Donald Flack, David Grounds and Elizabeth Levy will lose their jobs on July 1. Each had sought another four-year appointment.

Chief Judge David Hylla said he “was surprised by the outcome” but didn’t disclose details of the secret ballot. He said the remaining judges will increase their caseloads until replacements are found.
