Grand Illinois Trail and Parks Bike Tour to Ride Through Galesburg

gitaplogoOn Sunday, the 13th Annual Grand Illinois Trail and Parks Bike Tour will be traveling through the area, making a stop in Galesburg.Ride Chairman Chuck Oestreich says this year the trail will be more south than in the past, starting in Kewanee and looping around Galesburg and Chillicothe before returning.

Oestreich tells WGIL that they are excited to see new lands and meet new people.

“We’re going to be very close to the Hennepin Canal, in face we will be using that trail, so we are technically in the Grand Illinois Trail this year, except we go south a little bit,” says Oestreich. “Really we wanted to explore new territory and meet new people and see new environments, and especially we enjoy the small towns that we go to and we participate in.”

The group will be camping out at Carl Sandburg College when they stop in Galesburg on Sunday evening.

The tour will last six days total, making the trip roughly 60 miles per day, with a 25 mile extension available for those ambitious bikers.

The GITAP Bike Tour runs in support of the League of Illinois Bicyclist, a non-profit organization for improving statewide bicycling conditions.
