Hunigan Announced as Replacement For Nelson on Knox County Board

John HunniganMembers of the Knox County Board of Health met last night, including Knox County Board member representative Pamela Davidson, who announced that former County Clerk candidate John Hunigan is expected to be named as the replacement for the outgoing Russell Nelson.

Nelson announced last month that he would be leaving due to work obligations. Approval to name Hunigan as Nelson’s successor is expected to be formally voted upon in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Board of Health members discussed a number of topics, and received an update on the county’s recently introduced free vaccination program.

The program entitles under-insured residents over the age of 19 to receive vaccines at no cost to them. The state program announcement was made months ago and Director of Health Protection Sam Jarvis tells WGIL that the supply took awhile to get here.

“They announced it in February and said that through the coming months they would be working out logistics,” says Jarvis. “One thing was moving everything from paper forms. They moved that to their electronic system through I-care–which is the immunization registry.”

Jarvis added during the meeting that the county recently dealt with the potential for a “low risk” Ebola patient entering Knox County. The individual did not reportedly enter, however, Jarvis said the department followed all of the required steps in dealing with the issue.

Finally, the board welcomed two new department directors last night. Kerry Howard will serve as Director of CHC Operations, while Heather Kusler will take over for the outgoing Rhonda Peterson as Director of Family Health.
