Teams From 3 States Compete in Mine Safety, Rescue Event

HARRISBURG, Ill. (AP) — Teams of miners from Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky tested their safety and rescue skills in a two-day competition held this week in Harrisburg.

Gateway Mine in Coulterville, Illinois, won the first-place trophy on the opening day of the competition. SunRise Coal Mine Rescue Team from Oaktown, Indiana, took first place on the second day.

There were six rounds of exercises, ranging from fire training to hose management to first aid.

Twelve teams competed in the event, which was held at Southeastern Illinois College in partnership with Illinois Eastern Community Colleges.

Organizers says the competition encourages mine safety and increases awareness of available training to keep miners prepared and safe on the job.
