City Council to Discuss Boys & Girls Club Grant Proposal Tonight

Galesburg City Council Spring 2015A debate that has gone on for more than year will pick up again tonight as an extension of a decision that was made two weeks ago.

Galesburg City Council reconvenes this evening to discuss funding the Boys & Girls Club of Knox County up to $65,000.

The funding would be in the form of a grant, in order to renovate and maintain various amenities at the center including the furnace, boiler, and air conditioning unit.

City Aldermen decided at the last meeting that the naming of the club as the city’s temporary community center would no longer be the goal, and instead the council would look at a proposal tonight that would fund the club.

Through the original plan, the club could have been funded up to $115,000 through the sale of the cities previous center, which took place in 2013.

It is unclear where the $65,000 in grant funding would now come from. City Manager Todd Thompson told WGIL that council would need to discuss the issue prior to tonight’s meeting.

Council members are also expected to discuss the cities proposed utility tax increase tonight. The city is expected to raise more $2.35 million off of the 5 percent increase if it passes. The item is on first reading and will not be voted upon.
