Construction Starts On Illinois River Bridge in Meredosia

MEREDOSIA, Ill. (AP) — Construction has started on a bridge that will span the Illinois River at Meredosia (mair-uh-DOH’-shuh).

The Quincy Herald Whig reports the new $75 million bridge will replace a deteriorating two-lane bridge that was built in 1936. The bridge takes traffic across the river on Illinois 104.

The new bridge will have two traffic lanes and 10-foot shoulders on both sides. It is slated to be finished in fall 2018.

Illinois Department of Transportation engineer John Sestak says motirists will notice cranes and equipment on both sides of the river.

Meredosia Mayor Jim Rausch says Halverson Construction of Springfield plans to five 10-hour days and one eight-hour day each week with up to 200 workers on site at peak construction.

Meredosia is about 55 miles west of Springfield.
