Boys & Girls Club Receives Grant Funding

Galesburg City Council Spring 2015Following a year long debate, Galesburg City Council members finally came to agreement regarding the Boys & Girls Club of Knox County.

The council unanimously approved a proposal last night, granting the club $65,000–money which will be used to make various repairs to the boiler, air conditioning, and furnace systems.

The funds were given in the form of a grant, following revisions that were made at the previous council meeting which all but repealed adding the title of city “community center” to the deal.

Aldermen spent a handful of meetings hashing out the details on the issue. 7th Ward Alderman Jeremy Karlin addressed how items like this can be handled with more swiftness in the future.

“We could probably do it better in the future,” says Karlin. “While that is talking to specifics today, maybe this is just a request to all of you that hopefully we can arrive at a process that people feel good about. There is the appearance and reality of fair treatment. We really did make the Boys & Girls Club go through their paces, and in many respects, it really could have been handled a different way.”

Meanwhile, council members also began discussing a five percent utility tax increase. The proposal was on first reading and is expected to be continuously discussed in the coming weeks.
