Areas of Knox County To See Internet Expansion

frontier-logoInternet provider, Frontier Systems announced yesterday that it plans to expand upon broadband Internet services in parts of Knox County. The company will expend more than $31 million throughout Illinois in order to upgrade services in about 56,000 homes and businesses throughout the state–247 of which are in parts of Knox County.

The money was accepted by Frontier Systems through the Connect America Fund as a part of a nationwide expansion that will take place in 45 states and in parts of Puerto Rico.

Locally, an estimated $123,000 in upgrades will take place in mostly rural areas of the county, specifically in about five to six townships such as Knox and Cedar. These areas will be brought up to speeds of at least 10 megabits per second for downloads and one megabit per second uploads.

CAF is working through broadband upgrades in two phases, the second of which Frontier accepted funds for. According to press release administered by the FCC, carriers must build out broadband to 40 percent of its locations by the end of 2017, 60 percent by the end of 2018, and a complete build must be in place by the conclusion of 2020.
