Heavy Rains fill Chicago’s Deep Tunnel, Flood Riverwalk

CHICAGO (AP) — Heavy rainfall over the past several days has filled Chicago’s vast Deep Tunnel flood-control system, sending sewage-laced overflow into Lake Michigan and onto parts of the new Chicago Riverwalk.

The Chicago Tribune reports locks were opened near Navy Pier to prevent flooding in downtown parking garages and basements, and stormwater poured into the lake. WBBM-TV reports swimming wasn’t allowed at Chicago’s 26 lakefront beaches Tuesday because of high bacteria levels.

Crews worked Tuesday to clear a dark brown substance that was caked on a stretch of the downtown Riverwalk that opened last week.

The National Weather Service says there were 2.79 inches of rain at O’Hare International Airport on Monday and Tuesday. The top regional recording was 6.25 inches at Elburn in Kane County.
