Madigan: House Can Meet All Summer During Budget Impasse

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — House Speaker Michael Madigan says his chamber is ready to meet in “continuous session” all summer to resolve a budget impasse.

The Chicago Democrat spoke to reporters Tuesday as House lawmakers met in an overtime session. The House took up discussion on privatizing the state’s economic development agency. Earlier in the day the Senate discussed college affordability.

Rauner and Democrats, who control the Legislature, have been battling over the budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1. Democrats approved a plan that’s more than $3 billion short of anticipated revenue. They want Rauner to OK a tax increase, but the governor first wants pro-business measures such as a property tax freeze.

Madigan says he can’t recall the last time he spoke to Rauner about the budget.
