Chicago Firefighters Rescue Dog from Sludge-Filled Sewer

CHICAGO (AP) – A Chicago firefighter has rescued a 3-year-old pit bull after the dog fell about 10 feet into a sewer filled with sludge.
The Chicago Tribune reports the 90-pound dog named Theo fell while out for a walk with his owner Friday near a West Side fire station. The cover to the sewer was open because crews were working in the area.

Lt. Kenneth Trotter says Theo is a “buddy” of the firehouse’s resident dog, Freckles.

After Theo fell his owner ran to the fire station for help. Trotter says the dog was “fully engulfed” in sledge. A firefighter, with help from another crew, was able to get the animal out.

He says Theo needed to be contaminated but otherwise seemed fine and “so happy to be out.”
