Dozens Rescued from Flooded Area in Southwest Illinois

CENTREVILLE, Ill. (AP) – Rescue crews in southwestern Illinois have evacuated about 40 people from an area hit by flooding in the city of Centreville.
KSDK-TV reports that emergency personnel went door to door Friday afternoon. A few residents refused to leave despite flood waters that reached 4 feet in places.

Kendra Smith was evacuated with several young children and a dog. She says she had to walk in water up to her stomach to get her car out.

Emergency responders say heavy rain water settled in a low-lying area of about four blocks. They expect to carry out more evacuations throughout the weekend if the water doesn’t recede.

There was also flooding Friday in eastern Illinois, where the state’s department of transportation had to close a section of U.S. Highway 45.
