Aledo Police Chief to Retire after 38 Years of Service

Following more than eight years serving the City of Aledo, and 38 years of serving in Law Enforcement, the Aledo Chief of Police will be stepping down.

J. Michael Sponsler made that announcement yesterday. Sponsler will retire from his post, and city officials are expected to begin the job search for his replacement next month.

Sponsler began his career as a Mercer County Deputy Sheriff back in 1974. He then spent the majority of his career working more than 28 years with the Rock Island Police Department.

Sponsler tells WGIL, that its been a good 38 years.

“I’ve been blessed for 38 years, serving people, doing what I wanted to do and doing what I got into this profession to do,” says Sponsler. “I kind of feel that I’ve served my purpose. I feel very good about walking away from it at this time. I think it’s a good opportunity and time for me to do some of things I want to do with family.”

Sponsler said in a press release sent by the department, that there have “been good times and challenging times, but overall, working with the city has been a rewarding experience. Aledo is expected to have a new Chief chosen by early September.

The chosen individual is expected to start within the same month.
