Main Street Underpass Waiting on City Council Approval to Move Forward

Galesburg-city-signSome demolition has already begun in preparation for the underpass being put in on Main Street.

City Engineer Wayne Carl says there are about six more buildings that need to be taken down.

Carl tells Galesburg’s Morning News on WGIL that they have already bid out the demolition and are waiting on city council approval.

“We’ve opened bids for six more buildings to be tore down, so that will go to city council at their next meeting, and hopefully start some of that demo work in July,” says Carl. “The Gunther building is one that will be torn down, there are two brick buildings on the north side–one was the office bar, and one was an antique store. Then on the east side of the tracks, there was an antique store that will be torn down along with the big building behind it.”

Carl says when that underpass is put in, the Mendota line, which is the second most populated, will become a quiet zone.

Carl says another big project happening this summer is the Seminary Street reconstruction between Fremont and Walsh.

They are widening the street and accepted bids a few weeks ago, with plans to start in July.
