Knox College Hosts 300 Local Students for Knox College for Kids Program

Knox CollegeSince the program started in 1975, local students have been dedicating two weeks of their summer toward learning through the Knox College for Kids program.

The program began on June 15th and will conclude on June 26th. Students entering first through ninth grade have signed up, with more advanced activities in place for the older kids.

Co-Directors Jerry Miner and Jesse Dixon tell WGIL that the kids take three hour-long courses in a variety of subjects.

“The kids take three courses in the morning,” says miner.”There are three, one-hour courses, and they can take classes in the fine arts, languages, humanities, and social sciences, science and math. “The Junior kids come together–they don’t change classes or buildings, but the activity changes,” adds Dixon.

Miner says kids love the program and continue to return each year.

Knox College for Kids is run by Knox faculty, local professionals and Knox College students in the REACH program.

Miner says they have had past program student participants return as Knox College students or even Knox College faculty members to help teach the classes.

Dixon says there are roughly 40 different classes kids can choose from, and they are placed in classes based on their ranked preferences.
