6 Lombard Firefighters Honored for Assisting Baby Delivery

LOMBARD, Ill. (AP) – Six Lombard firefighters have received “stork awards” for helping deliver a baby in January. Tim Hillesheim, John Studnicka, Dale Farris and Joe Kaforski, Lt. Tony Sally and Sgt. Dave Kundrot were honored last week at the Lombard Village Board meeting. The mother they assisted, Joanna Koppang, her baby Abby and the rest of their family helped present the awards.

Koppang went into labor while riding a commuter train to Wheaton, where her husband waited to take her to the hospital. But labor progressed quickly and Koppang was forced to exit the train at Lombard.

Firefighters were dispatched and Koppang safely gave birth in an ambulance.

Lombard firefighters are required to be cross-trained as paramedics to provide emergency medical treatment when responding to calls.

Lombard is 22 miles west of Chicago.
