Records: Parole Granted to Man Convicted in 1973 Cop Death

CHICAGO (AP) – Authorities say a man convicted of first-degree murder in the 1973 death of a Chicago police officer has been granted parole. Illinois Department of Corrections online records show Joseph Bigsby was out of custody Thursday and paroled. He’d been serving a 200-year sentence in Danville for the shooting death of Officer Edward Barron.

Then a teenager, Bigbsy was being pursued by Barron following two armed robberies when authorities say Bigsby shot the officer. In addition to being sentenced in 1975 for murder, Bigsby was also sentenced for attempted murder and armed robbery.

In a statement late Thursday, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy criticized the Illinois Prisoner Review Board’s vote as “incomprehensible,” calling it an “affront to the entire law enforcement community.”
It was immediately unclear if Bigsby had an attorney.
