Veterinarian Accused of Keeping Dozens of Animals in Squalor

MARION, Ill. (AP) – A former veterinarian in southern Illinois is facing accusations of housing animals in squalor after dozens were removed from her property last month.
The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports Elisa Kirkpatrick of Creal Springs turned herself in Thursday and posted $500 bond. Authorities had removed from her property more than 40 dogs, 15 cats, two pigs, a donkey, a cockatoo, a bobcat and a serval, which is an African wild cat.

Charges against Kirkpatrick include aggravated animal cruelty, stemming from an accusation that she performed surgery on an animal in unsanitary conditions, leading to its death. She’s also accused of continuing to practice veterinary medicine after her license was suspended late last year.

Kirkpatrick previously told the newspaper that she took in animals no one else wanted, and became overwhelmed caring for them as her father became ill and died.
