Flooding Forces Illinois River City to Cancel Fireworks

PERU, Ill. (AP) — The city of Peru on the Illinois River is canceling its Independence Day fireworks for a second year in a row because of flooding.

Public services manager Jeff King told the city’s parks and recreation board Thursday that the river is expected to crest at 24 feet through July 2. He says that’s 4 feet above flood stage.

King says the issue is one of safety and that workers can’t even get heavy equipment into the area to clear mud.

The city’s Independence Day celebrations, including fireworks on July 3, were to take place on Water Street, which has been barricaded for more than a week because of the rising river levels.

The (LaSalle) News-Tribune says the board will meet July 14 to discuss rescheduling the fireworks.
