Knox County Humane Society Celebrates 20 years at Their Facility

Today is the 20th anniversary of the Knox County Humane Society in their current facility.

Director Erin Buckmaster says the Knox County Humane Society was established in 1950, but this anniversary is when they acquired the space.

Buckmaster tells WGIL that they purchased the property in 1994 that included an old animal disease lab and turned it into a shelter and Animal Control center.

“In 1994, we were able to purchase the old animal disease lab,” says Buckmaster. “We opened up for business for animal control and for our animal shelter in 1995, so, this is our 20th year anniversary of having the shelter and also animal control for the City of Galesburg.”

Buckmaster says within the last 10 years, they have been able to reduce the annual animal euthanasia rates from about 1200 to less than 50.

The Knox County Humane Society offers several services for pets as well, including spay and neutering and grooming services.
