City Council to Discuss Fire and Police Pension Increases Tonight

6-23-14 Galesburg City CouncilThe Galesburg City Council will meet tonight in a work session to discuss a growing city deficit in relation to an increase in police and fire pension contributions.

The recommended contribution by the city is expected to grow by $1.3 Million for the next year, if aldermen agree to pay out at the rate that is projected now. An already growing deficit would then sit at nearly $2 Million citywide.

The climbing deficit does not sit solely in the hands of council. Cities across the state are waiting for the verdict from Springfield in order to better understand their financial situations.

Galesburg city officials could agree to pay less in contributions, as the current allocation is above legal requirements. That decision has been discussed in past meetings, however, no change has been made.

In other business, aldermen will take up discussion regarding the cities proposed five percent utility tax increase. City Manager Todd Thompson has said that the potential implementation of the tax could bring in more than $2.3 Million for the city—money which could help to decrease the deficit.

City council meets tonight at 5:30.
