Illinois Rainfall in June Breaks Record for Wettest Month

National Weather ServiceFlood watches and warnings have been issued on an off all month throughout the state of Illinois.According to General Meteorologist Matt Barnes of the National Weather Service Lincoln office, this has been the wettest June on record so far.

Barnes says specifically for Galesburg, it has been the 15th wettest year, with total precipitation for the month at an average of 6.88 inches, and typically the average is 4.3 inches.

Barnes tells WGIL that the impact of all this rain not only affects the local agriculture, but the rivers as well.

“Aside from agricultural impacts, where the fields have become too wet for the crops, the immediate impact would be along the area rivers,” says Barnes. “We’ve got numerous rivers across the state that are at or above flood stage, even some that are above major flood stage. So I think the main impact from all the rain is actually the on-going river flooding, which will last for several weeks.”

Barnes says that according to a climate prediction center report, July is expected to have lower temperatures and higher precipitation than normal as well.
