District 205 School Board Questions Code of Conduct Amendments

205logobwAt last night’s District 205 Board of Education Meeting, the board discussed some issues they had with the new changes suggested for the 2015-2016 Code of Conduct.

Board members Tianna Cervantez and Wayne Statham spoke out about some of the language that may penalize athletes from participating in extracurricular activities.

Statham addressed concerns over an example included which states “involvement in any criminal or immoral activity as determined by police or district staff.”

Statham told Board members that people hold varying morals that some may deem inappropriate while others do not.

“You only have to turn on the TV last couple of days to determine that our feelings and morals vary from person to person,” says Statham. “I don’t think that the Athletic Director and Assistant Superintendent need to be morality police and decide which kids can and cannot participate in activities based upon those two individuals moral codes.”

The board decided to approve the changes, other than the area of athlete penalties.

The board also tabled discussion on an agreement with the Galesburg Public Library over compensation concerns.
