USDA Says Rain Delays Illinois Winter Wheat, Hay Harvests

CHICAGO (AP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture says rain is delaying winter wheat harvest and hay cutting in northern and central Illinois.

The USDA’s weekly crop report was issued Monday.

It says that precipitation statewide averaged 1.92 inches, or 0.94 inches above normal and there was just one day suitable for fieldwork during the week ending June 28.

Corn silking was at 2 percent, slightly behind last year at this time. Even so, 49 percent of corn was rated as in good condition and 13 percent in excellent condition. Twenty-seven percent of corn was rated fair, 8 percent poor and 3 percent very poor.

The USDA says soybeans are about 5 percent behind last year.
