SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois lawmakers plan to adopt a one-month temporary budget Wednesday to avoid a partial government shutdown on the first day of the fiscal year.
House Speaker Michael Madigan plans to shepherd a $2.3 billion plan to provide state police protection, operate veterans homes, provide nutrition for the elderly and more. But Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office indicated Tuesday he will consider it unbalanced and veto it.
Rauner and legislative Democrats have been unable to agree on a budget for the 2016 fiscal year. Rauner wants changes in business and political practices to save money. Democrats say he should settle the budget first.
The Legislature sent the first-term governor a $36 billion spending plan in June which lawmakers acknowledged wasn’t balanced. A Rauner aide says he’ll view a temporary plan similarly.
