Charleston Appoints New Mayor After Mayor Rennels’ Death

CHARLESTON, Ill. (AP) — City Council members in Charleston have chosen a new mayor to serve out the remainder of the term of Mayor Larry Rennels, who died last week.

The (Charleston) Times-Courier and Mattoon Journal-Gazette report that the Charleston City Council during an emergency session Tuesday appointed mayor pro tempore Brandon Combs to serve the rest of Rennels’ term. The 67-year-old Rennels died Thursday of natural causes.

The council also chose former council member Jim Dunn to fill Combs’ open council seat. Council member Matthew Hutti is now the city’s mayor pro tempore.

Combs says he fills confident assuming the role of mayor and says the city will now carry on in the way Rennels would have wanted.
