Eastern Illinois University Could See Budget Cuts, Layoffs

CHARLESTON, Ill. (AP) — The president of Eastern Illinois University says the school is considering budget-cutting measures including layoffs.

The (Charleston) Times-Courier and Mattoon Journal-Gazette report that President David Glassman said in an email Tuesday that employees could begin receiving layoff notices in July. Glassman says it’s “critically important” that EIU “right-size itself to the level of its lower student enrollment.”

Glassman says overall enrollment at the school declined almost 28 percent since fiscal year 2007.

The president says making adjustments will let the university hold tuition down to a price that will let it recruit students but still keep the school financially stable.

Glassman said in the budget update email that university officials have prepared a fiscal year 2016 budget that leaves the school with a deficit of between $12 million and $14 million.
