Congresswoman Cheri Bustos Visits Pegasus Manufacturing to Talk about Skills Gaps

Bustos picCongresswoman Cheri Bustos made an appearance in Galesburg yesterday when she stopped by Pegasus Manufacturing to discuss closing the skills gap.

Various local leaders and officials joined the Congresswoman in discussion about how to get more workers prepared for manufacturing jobs.

Bustos tells the group that it is a collaborative effort and that her office may be able to help when it comes to grants to help with training costs.

“You’ve got the right people involved,” says Bustos. “You’ve got the current mayor, the former mayor who is still involved with DCEO, you’ve got workforce folks, and the community college–you have the right people sitting around the table. In our office, if there are grant opportunities for training the legislation I support would support all of this. The problem is, it’s not easy to get legislation passed these days.

Pegasus Owner Ray Whitehead says it is “encouraging” to have Bustos stop by to hear what they had to say.

Whitehead says there are good paying manufacturing jobs across Illinois, and it will take a collaborative effort with high schools, vocational schools and the industry to train workers for those jobs.

Bustos offered a few suggestions for the group of leaders, such as field trips to expose younger students to the possibility of a manufacturing career path.
