galesburg fire patchAt approximately 4:28 this morning, the Galesburg Fire Department was called to 385 Lawrence Avenue for a house on fire.According to Fire Chief Tom Simkins, the fire was based towards the front of the residence.

11 on-duty firefighters were instructed by Chief Simkins to knock down the main body of the fire to help protect surrounding houses.

Ameren showed up on scene to disconnect the power for the street, as the service line had melted and the hot lead was laying in the driveway.

According to Chief Simkins, the one and a half story house had balloon frame construction with knee walls and void spaces on the top floor, making it difficult to extinguish. Simkins says when firefighters arrived, the fire was already in the walls and quickly moved to the attic, leading to the burning of a large hole in the roof.

The Galesburg Fire Department and Galesburg Police Department are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Three residents were outside the house when GFD arrived and were evaluated for smoke inhalation. Volunteers through the American Red Cross arrived on-scene to assist family members. There were no other injuries reported, however a cat did not survive the fire.
